After testing Ultimate Engine Tweaks, I was left wondering if there were any other tweaks that could boost performance even further. While many claim to help, I wasn’t terribly impressed with most of what I found.
Testing Methodology
Since my original Ultimate Engine Tweaks review, I’ve updated my drivers to version 576.28 and performed a fresh install of the game. Because of this, I re-ran all previous tests for consistency.
To measure each mod’s impact, I traveled a short distance across the province. I created a save at the starting location and reloaded it for each run. After loading, I waited for performance to normalize, as the game needed to reload assets each time. This process was repeated three times, with each mod and Vanilla.

Hardware
- GPU: RTX 3080 Ti
- CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X3D
- RAM: 64GB @ 3600 MHz
Results
1. Lumen Begone
From my testing, only one mod was able to dethrone Ultimate Engine Tweaks, that mod being Lumen Begone. It boosted performance by up to 39% by disabling the Lumen lighting system, and it includes the tweaks from UET.
Lumen Begone does cause some visual downgrade due to the disabled lighting, but it’s not as drastic as you might expect. Still, unless you’re okay with this graphical hit or really need the performance, I’d stick with #2.
2. Ultimate Engine Tweaks
Ultimate Engine Tweaks is the most downloaded performance mod for Oblivion Remastered, and based on my testing, it’s the best overall for improving performance without affecting visuals. On average, performance improved by 20% just by installing the mod.
3. Optimized Tweaks OBLR
Optimized Tweaks OBLR came in a very close third, falling just a few frames behind. It improved performance by around 18%. Interestingly, it edged out UET slightly in both max and min FPS categories, but not by enough to take the top spot.
4. Optimalsations
With Optimalsations, I tested both the High Quality and Quality presets, hoping one might offer a boost without much visual sacrifice. While it succeeded in preserving visuals, neither profile delivered satisfying performance.
- High Quality provided about a 3% improvement but reduced 1% lows by 4%.
- Quality achieved a 6% gain with no major downsides.
As these improvements seem to be negligible I would bother using this mod unless you were trying the more optimized profiles.
Regarding the Claims by Digital Foundry
They are correct that these mods do nothing to resolve the underlying issues. None of these mods were able to fix the stutter issues, even though all of them except Lumen Begone claimed they could. However, from my testing, there is a perceivable improvement to performance, so I wouldn’t go as far as saying these mods do nothing.
Conclusion
While many mods claim to be the fix for Oblivion Remastered’s performance issues, further testing makes it clear that only the developers can truly solve them. Still, until that patch arrives, these mods offer varying degrees of help.
My personal recommendations:
- Ultimate Engine Tweaks – The best performance boost with with no percieved visual difference.
- Optimized Tweaks OBLR – Performance gains similar to UET, again with no perceieved visual difference.
- Lumen Begone – Excellent performance boost, but with a noticeable visual downgrade.
However, given how much performance can vary depending on your hardware, it’s worth trying different ones.
What do you think? Have you tried these mods yourself? Do you agree with the order I went with?
