Satisfaction: 5/5
Gorn 2 is the sequel to Gorn, which released in 2019. Like any good sequel, it builds on the original while maintaining a familiar feel. Just about everything has been expanded. There are more weapons, more enemies, and more arenas, giving you plenty of new ways, places, and things to fight.
Tech: 4.5/5
Like the original, Gorn 2 runs on the Unity Engine, developed by Cortopia and Free Lives, and published by Devolver Digital. It not only looks better but performs just as well, which is incredibly important for VR. Performance issues in virtual reality are not just frustrating, they can cause headaches and motion sickness.
The only downside is the lack of graphical settings. However, since the game runs so well by default, this is only a minor issue.
Atmosphere: 5/5
In VR, atmosphere plays a huge role in immersion, and Gorn 2 delivers on that front. While it doesn’t have the highest fidelity visuals, it is a clear improvement over the first game. Realism isn’t needed here. Just like in the original, your brain quickly accepts the world as a new reality.
One drawback is how easy it is to get disoriented in your play space. You may find yourself accidentally punching a wall. But honestly, that only proves how immersive the experience is.
The game also nails the audio and soundtrack. Weapons and effects sound exactly how they should, and each level’s music fits the mood perfectly.
Replayability: 4/5
Although the story itself does not offer much replay value, the game absolutely does. You can revisit any levels you’ve already completed, and the sandbox mode is a perfect match for this style of gameplay. It’s highly customizable: choose the arena, set the rules, and fight however you want.
Story: 4/5
Gorn 2 is not a story-heavy game, but there is a narrative. You play as a gladiator who must defeat the five sons of the god of the afterlife. To do this, you fight through each of their arenas until they consider you a worthy opponent.
Each arena has a unique theme, and the enemies are designed to match. This gives you a different challenge depending on where you are. Once you have proven your worth, you get to take on the brothers in boss fights.
The story isn’t legendary, but it fits well with this kind of game. At the end of the day, this is a sandbox arena fighter. The story is just there to give it a little structure.
Final Score: 4.6/5
