Satisfaction: 3/5

Although rough around the edges, Chernobylite is a fun game to play. It feels incredibly reminiscent of S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Fallout 4, especially with the base building mechanics, but it still very much holds its own.

The biggest detractor from my enjoyment was the clairvoyant enemy AI, which I also touch on in the Tech section.

Tech: 3/5

Chernobylite was developed by The Farm 51 in Unreal Engine 4 and generally performs quite well and looks great. Unfortunately, the game has stuttering issues and odd slowdowns in certain areas which detract from the experience.

The enemy AI is also frustrating. Once spotted, enemies will continue to shoot at you even when you’re behind cover or in spots where you should be out of their line of sight.

Atmosphere: 5/5

Whether it’s the zone or the alien structures it spawns, Chernobylite nails the atmosphere. It mixes the very real horror of the Chernobyl disaster with a sci-fi twist, creating a fictional world that still makes sense.

As for the soundtrack, I think it was well done, even if it’s not as memorable as scores from other titles in this genre.

Replayability: 3/5

Chernobylite handles replayability in an interesting way. Thanks to a certain in-game mechanic, you’re able to redo most of your major decisions at any time. Because of this, there’s not much reason to replay the entire game unless you missed something that couldn’t be fixed (like I did) or really enjoy the gameplay loop and resource gathering.

Story: 4/5

Chernobylite tells the story of Igor, a man who returns to Pripyat to unravel the mystery of his wife’s disappearance 30 years earlier. With the zone now occupied by a hostile military force and supernatural creatures, you must assemble a team to help you survive and complete your mission.

I found the story captivating, even though some plot points were predictable. That didn’t stop me from enjoying it from start to finish.

Final Score: 3.5/5

Pros:

  • Interesting Story
  • Great graphics

Cons:

  • Enemy AI
  • Performance issues
